چکیده

This study presents the first systematic observations of active gas seepage from seafloor in main fjords western Spitsbergen Svalbard archipelago. High-resolution acoustic water column data were acquired throughout two research cruises August 2015 and June 2021. 883 flares have been identified characterized Isfjorden, 115 Van Mijenfjorden. The hydroacoustic indicate fluid migration into column. Interpretation 1943 km regional offshore 2D seismic profiles supplemented existing geochemical by providing geological control on distribution source rocks potential pathways for fluids. In area, bedrock architecture controls deep rocks. Faults, high permeability layers, heavily fractured units igneous intrusions channel presented this are an important step towards assessment how near-shore impacts upon carbon budget fjords, which constitute a globally recognized early climate change warning system High Arctic.

Monothalamous foraminifera from West Spitsbergen fjords, Svalbard: a brief overview

During the 2004 summer season, 14 sediment samples were collected in Kongs− fjorden and Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen, from 6 down to 345 m water−depth (mwd). The samples yielded abundant assemblage of monothalamous foraminifera, belonging to almost 40 morphotypes. Our qualitative (>125 μm) and quantitative data (125–500 μm) allowed to distinguish three water−depth related assemblages in both Kon...

Temporal constraints on hydrate-controlled methane seepage off Svalbard.

Methane hydrate is an icelike substance that is stable at high pressure and low temperature in continental margin sediments. Since the discovery of a large number of gas flares at the landward termination of the gas hydrate stability zone off Svalbard, there has been concern that warming bottom waters have started to dissociate large amounts of gas hydrate and that the resulting methane release...

Taxonomy and Biophysical Properties of Cryophilic Microalgae and Their Environmental Factors in Northwest Spitsbergen, Svalbard

Snow fields and glaciers are habitats of microalgae that developed a physiology which is optimized to such an extremely cold and nutrient-poor environment. Five expeditions to Spitsbergen, Svalbard, in consecutive years (1995...1999) have provided an insight into the dispersal, distribution, and the environmental factors that affect snow algae. The last expedition laid the foundation for labora...

Variability of Water Chemistry in Tundra Lakes, Petuniabukta Coast, Central Spitsbergen, Svalbard

Samples of water from small tundra lakes located on raised marine terraces on the eastern coast of Petuniabukta (Ebbadalen, Central Spitsbergen) were examined to assess the changes in water chemistry that had occurred during the summer seasons of 2001-2003 and 2006. The unique environmental conditions of the study region include the predominance of sedimentary carbonate and sulphate rocks, low ...
